Trauma Survivors Network - provided by ATS

Survive. Connect. Rebuild.

A Program of the ATS

HCA Florida Blake Hospital

HCA Florida Blake Hospital is a Level II Trauma Center designated by the Florida Department of Health. This means the staff at our hospital provides expert trauma care to patients throughout Bradenton and its surrounding communities. The sooner a trauma patient receives treatment the better, so having access to trauma care close to home is crucial.

The Trauma Center at HCA Florida Blake Hospital has been verified as a Level II Trauma Center by the Verification Review Committee (VRC), an ad hoc committee of the Committee on Trauma (COT) of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). This achievement recognizes the trauma center's dedication to providing optimal care for injured patients. Established by the American College of Surgeons in 1987, the COT's Consultation/Verification Program for Hospitals promotes the development of trauma centers in which participants provide not only the hospital resources necessary for trauma care, but also the entire spectrum of care to address the needs of all injured patients. This spectrum encompasses the prehospital phase through the rehabilitation process.

Trauma centers provide specialized medical services and resources to patients with traumatic injuries. Appropriate treatment has been shown to increase positive outcomes for injured patients. Accredited trauma centers must be continuously prepared to treat the most serious life threatening and disabling injuries.

The major difference between a hospital without and a hospital with a trauma center is the requirement for 24-hour availability of a trauma care team. These providers include trauma surgeons, neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, radiologists and nurses. Specialty resources also include 24-hour availability of a trauma resuscitation area in the emergency room (ER), an operating room, laboratory testing, diagnostic testing, blood bank and pharmacy.

Hospitals that pursue trauma center accreditation must comply with the thorough trauma care accreditation process through the Florida Department of Health and are required to assure trauma care is delivered according to established standards of care.
