Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation is an active process of restoring, improving, and/or maintaining a person’s functional independence and quality of life. The rehabilitation process focuses on controlling pain and inflammation and regaining normal joint range of motion, flexibility, strength, endurance, balance and coordination, and power. Rehabilitation addresses the physical, mental, and social needs of the patient based upon a team approach. Members of the rehabilitation team include physicians, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, orthotists, prosthetists, psychologists, and social workers along with the patient, family, and friends. Each health care worker is involved in the identification of needs and the setting of goals within a coordinated treatment plan.

The shared goals of the team members are to:

(1) identify and monitor additional conditions and complications
(2) treat existing problems
(3) mobilize the patient as early as possible
(4) restore function or maximize residual function
(5) provide adaptive equipment.
