Health Insurance

After an injury, there are many financial considerations and concerns for the patient and the family members. Since medical and rehabilitation treatment can be expensive and long-lasting, it is very important that individuals with injuries and/or disabilities have sufficient and appropriate medical coverage.

The first step is to determine if there is health care coverage and what exactly is covered. One should not assume that all costs and recommended treatment are covered. If the injury is a motor vehicle accident, a patient may be covered by his or her automobile insurance policy and a workplace accident may be covered by Worker’s Compensation Insurance. Sometimes, a family has several kinds of insurance benefits and payments are shared by several sources. This is called coordination of benefits. At some hospitals, the coordination of benefits is done by the hospital billing department and at others it is the responsibility of the patient and family. The social worker at the hospital will be able to provide you with this information.
