Trauma Survivors Network - provided by ATS

Survive. Connect. Rebuild.

A Program of the ATS

Volunteer for the TSN

The success of the TSN depends on people like you who are able to volunteer their time helping others. There are many ways you can volunteer your time. Here are just a few examples:

Become a Peer Visitor

As a peer visitor you can help other survivors by listening to their concerns and answering some of the many questions they have early on in their recovery. If you have experienced a traumatic injury and would like to become a peer visitor, you will be asked to complete a training program that teaches you how to listen, communicate better and develop a deeper understanding of the recovery process. After completing the training, you will be certified as a peer visitor and your hospital will connect you with other trauma survivors who have requested a peer visitation. Becoming a peer visitor is one of the best ways you can touch the lives of others at a critical time after injury.

Help Organize or Lead a Support Groups

When you experience a major event in your life, like being injured, it is helpful to be around other people who are facing similar challenges. Support groups offer this opportunity. If there is a support group already up and running in your hospital, find out how you can help facilitate the group and its activities. If your hospital does not yet have a support group, learn how you might work with the hospital in forming a support group. By volunteering to help with a support group you will help other survivors connect and rebuild their lives.

Become a NextSteps Leader or Facilitator

The NextSteps program offers the opportunity for survivors to work together over 8 to 10 weeks and learn how to meet the challenges of recovery and become ‘self-managers’ of their lives. Each group is directed by a trained NextSteps group leader together with a group facilitator. Either the group leader or the facilitator is a trauma survivor. If your hospital already has a NextSteps program up and running, learn how you could get involved in helping to facilitate the class. If your hospital does not currently have a NextSteps program, we would welcome the opportunity to talk with you about starting a class.

These are just some of the ways you can get involved. If you would like to learn more about any of these or other opportunities, fill out our TSN Volunteer Form or talk to the TSN coordinator at your hospital.
