Center Shoutout: Chandler Regional Medical Center

Supporting trauma survivors and their loved ones is the primary goal of not only the Chandler Regional Medical Center chapter, but also the goal of the Trauma Survivors Network. The Chandler Regional Chapter was awarded a TSN grant to broaden the assistance we provide to our patients and their families.

The CRMC TSN Resource Library was conceptualized with the help of the care coordination team and social work team. With funding from the grant, I worked with a local bookstore to purchase books and workbooks for the chapter members to have access to. Initially the intent was to loan out and collect the books. However, with more thought and consideration we decided to move forward with giving the resources to members.

Changing Hands Bookstore in Tempe Arizona was incredibly open and willing to assist us in helping us build the resource library. When books and workbooks we wanted were unavailable for them to purchase, they provided us with suggestions for books that were similar. They also graciously offered a discount to help stretch the grant further. Here is a list of the resources purchased. Some of the funds have been held back to allow for future purchases to restock the resource “library” of popular items, or obtaining new to the market books.

  • The Body Keeps the Score, Bessel Van Der Kolk, M.D.
  • Life With a Traumatic Brain Injury, Amy Zellmer
  • The Grieving Brain, Mary-Frances O’Connor, PhD
  • The Grieving Body, Mary-Frances O’Connor, PhD
  • A Leg to Stand On, James R. Morey
  • The Complex PTSD Workbook, Arielle Schwartz, PhD
  • Every Deep Drawn Breath, Wes Ely, MD
  • When Breath Becomes Air, Paul Kalanithi
  • Trauma Stewardship, Laura van Dernoot Lipsky and Connie Burk

The CRMC TSN chapter is made up of survivors, family members and staff. The books are also available to staff members who seek resources as well. Caring for injured people on a daily basis requires additional support for the spirit and mind. We look forward to using the books as a tool to aid our members. A copy of each resource will be available at the in person meeting for members to take. Additionally the social workers who work with new TSN members have a list of the resources and will reach out to the chapter leader to obtain them.
